whatever

I know I was going to update this every week but life sometimes gets in the way. My grandfather died which has been difficult to deal with. We weren't allowed to see him for years and then suddenly this year, he was in a nursing home for a few weeks so we went to see him. The people who had been stopping us from seeing him weren't there and they had no idea of out visit with him until after. It was good to see him. However, it was also difficult because he hated not being allowed to visit us and he even thought we'd forgotten about - that could never be true.

While we were visiting my grandfather, he said he wanted us to have lunch. We promised we would have lunch with him but when I tried to organise it, I was told "no". Unfortunately, he had fluid on the lungs a few weeks later, his kidneys failed and we were told to go and say goodbye. So, we did. He was in a hospital about an hour and a half south of Perth. it's quite a nice drive down there but it was an unpleasant experience. I've never been in the room with someone while they were dying before. Perhaps it's horrible but I sat there praying for the Goddess to ease his suffering. My grandfather had been wanting to die for a while and we couldn't hold him here if he wanted to go. I accepted he was ready.

The funeral was difficult. My grandfather had decided the things he wanted, and paid for his funeral in advance. Even so, there were things that we felt, that we needed to say, for our grieving process. One of my aunties decided it was all about her and she once again, stopped us from participating. She stopped us from being a part of his life and now stopped us from being a part of his death. What should have been a rather happy occaision for a man who lived 95 years, and who was ready to go, turned out to be a very sad and bitter experience for most of his children and grandchildren. I was so angry to have been robbed of my grandfather, once again.

Through all the tears, and the anger, I did have one moment of pride. My two eldest nephews were too distraught to attend the funeral, but my third eldest nephew, Riki, did attend the funeral. He's 13. When it came time to close the grave, he helped. As the eldest of my sister's children present, he stepped up. It was a milestone event for him. A step toward being a man? So I was proud of him.

In other news. My sister has Sjogren's syndrome. It's an autoimmune disease. The whole thing is totally complicated but she's actually a lot younger than most people who have it. Recently, it's started to affect her heart. If it continues to affect her heart, then she will probably need a heart transplant. She's 33, so it's not looking good. At the moment, we're just taking each day as it comes and waiting to see what happens.

Cuenta Conmigo

Where can I find a copy of this song? It's clearly the Spanish version of Stand By Me. I wanted to use it in a class at school. We need to look at different versions of the same song. This song has been done so many times by so many different artists. I love this version of it, though. I can't find the album anywhere. I tried itunes, bigpond and a few other sites. None of them have it. I even tried Arturo's official website but some of the pages don't work. Please help me?

Dear President Obama:

If you, as President, truly seek freedom and justice for all, act to right the wrongs committed by our government in years gone by. Begin by granting Executive Clemency to Leonard Peltier.

Leonard Peltier, an innocent man, was convicted for the 1975 shooting deaths of two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. U.S. prosecutors have repeatedly admitted that they did not and cannot prove Peltier's guilt and the appellate courts have cited numerous instances of investigative and prosecutorial misconduct in this case. As late as November 2003, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals acknowledged that "…Much of the government’s behavior at the Pine Ridge Reservation and its prosecution of Leonard Peltier is to be condemned. The government withheld evidence. It intimidated witnesses. These facts are not disputed."

The courts claim they lack the power to right this wrong. But, as President, you can.

In this case, your concern should be for equal treatment. From the time of Peltier's conviction until the mid-1990s, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the average length of imprisonment served for homicide in the United States ranged from 94 to 99.8 months. Even if you were to take Peltier's two consecutive life sentences into account at the higher end of this range, it is clear that Peltier should have been released a very long time ago. His continued imprisonment after over 30 years appears to be nothing less than revenge for a crime Leonard Peltier did not commit. Personalized and politically motivated vengeance of this kind cannot be tolerated. The concepts of justice and good government require that you act to correct this wrong.

Peltier has served his time. Even by the government's own definition, he has already been imprisoned for a lifetime. In that time, he has missed the simplest things of ordinary life—having dinner with friends, taking walks in the woods, gardening, children's laughter, dogs barking, the feel of rain on his face, the sound of birds singing... winter and summer and spring and fall. He has missed seeing his children and grandchildren grow up. They suffer, too. Leonard Peltier is now a great-grandfather. How many more generations must suffer this tragedy?

After careful consideration of the facts in Leonard Peltier's case, I have concluded that Leonard Peltier does not represent a risk to the public. First, Leonard Peltier has no prior convictions and has advocated for non-violence throughout his prison term. Furthermore, Leonard Peltier has been a model prisoner. He has received excellent evaluations from his work supervisors on a regular basis. He continues to mentor young Native prisoners, encouraging them to lead clean and sober lives. He has used his time productively, disciplining himself to be a talented painter and an expressive writer. Although Leonard Peltier maintains that he did not kill the agents, he has openly expressed remorse and sadness over their deaths.

Most admirably, Mr. Peltier contributes regular support to those in need. He donates his paintings to charities including battered women's shelters, half way houses, alcohol and drug treatment programs, and Native American scholarship funds. He also coordinates an annual gift drive for the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation—a successful program that, in 2006, expanded to include other reservations throughout the country.

Leonard Peltier is widely recognized in the human rights community for his good deeds and in turn has won several human rights awards including the North Star Frederick Douglas Award; Federation of Labour (Ontario, Canada) Humanist of the Year Award; Human Rights Commission of Spain International Human Rights Prize; and 2004 Silver Arrow Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2009, Mr. Peltier also was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the sixth consecutive year.

Leonard Peltier is over 60 years old and his health is deteriorating. He has suffered a stroke which left him partially blind in one eye. For many years, Peltier had a seriously debilitating jaw condition which left him unable to chew properly and caused consistent pain and headaches. Today, Leonard Peltier continues to suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, and a heart condition. He risks blindness, kidney failure, stroke, and certainly premature death given his diet, living conditions, and health care.

I say enough is enough, Mr. President. Do the right thing. Grant Executive Clemency to Leonard Peltier right away.

Thank you for giving fair consideration to Leonard Peltier.

Sincerely,

Signature

My trip to Oaxaca and Chiapas.

So, I finally started saving for my trip to Oaxaca again, since I had to spend the money I'd already saved trying to figure out what was wrong with my back. MRIs and appointments with various doctors are not cheap. Anyway, I had a couple of extra payments come my way that I wasn't expecting and I now have quite a bit of money put aside. I have the money to get me to Oaxaca and home again but not the money for hotels, food, day trips etc. So I'm working on that and I have my savings strategy in place which is working out well so far. All I really need to do is figure out the cost of accommodation, food and other expenses and then decide when to go. Then I also need to work out the Chiapas portion of it. If this will be my only trip to Mexico (I really hope not), then I want to visit Chiapas while I'm there.

I found a cruise to Mexico from Los Angeles which I can already afford to do but it doesn't go to Oaxaca or Chiapas. The cruise isn't until November but I need to book by April 9 and I don't want to book anything this early until I figure out all the places I want to go, how much it's all going to cost and all of those other things.
$2099 -- Mexican Riviera 8-Night Fly, Cruise & Stay Package
Travel dates: Departs 7, 14 Nov
You will board the Sapphire Princess in Los Angeles and cruise down through the Mexican Riviera, stopping off at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas before returning to Los Angeles. All meals and onboard entertainment are included.
http://au.deals.travelzoo.com/holidays/561958
The other thing that puts me off this cruise, other than the fact it doesn't go to Oaxaca or Chiapas is cruise don't appeal to me. There are lots of cruises closer to home that are far more affordable but who really wants to get on a boat just to gamble in a casino on board. If I get on a boat I want to be close to the water with the wind in my hair and tasting the salt, if you know what I mean. So I think that cruise is out even though it seems like a great deal, it'sjust not for me but I'm still considering it anyway.

I'm not sure about visiting Chiapas since I don't know anybody who lives there and I have no idea about accommodation or anything, unlike I do with Oaxaca. I'm not even sure of locations of places I want to visit or anything like that. I could be planning a trip that's totally not doable and that would be horrible to find out once I get there.

So, I'm currently making a list of things I want to do in Oaxaca and then I'll work out the best way to go about it.
The things I want to do/places I want to visit in Oaxaca are:
*Cafe Los Cuiles (I've been wanting to go there for 2 years)
* eat a tlayuda (I've been drooling over the sound of these for 2 years - time to finally try one)
* Mitla
* Yagul
* Monte Alban
* taste the chocolate (highly recommended by Ricardo :D)
* Hierve el Agua
* San Jose del Pacifico
* hiking in the mountains (but I don't have a clue where to start. Any help with this one would be very much appreciated)

So, about two years ago I heard about Yu'us http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/latamer/mexico/mader2.htm and I thought they were a brilliant idea - my kind of thing, really. I hear they're very cheap but hard to locate. I'm thinking this might be the way to go for a few days and then I can go hiking in the mountians from there. Yesterday I read that you're only provided with a sheet and a thing blanket - I'm Australian and I really feel the cold so I'll need to buy a blanket (or two) once I get to Oaxaca. If anyone can tell me where I can buy a cheap (but warm) blanket from, please do. I won't be taking the blanket home with me, it's only for while I'm there so then I can give it to a charity over there or something, I'm sure they can find someone who could use it. If you have any advice about that, please let me know.

My only concern after that is where to stay in the city. There's a few hostels and things that are quite cheap but they're mixed dorms. I don't fancy that. It really puts me off but at this point I can't afford anywhere else.

Hiking trails
What are the best hiking trails in Oaxaca? Any recommendations? Please keep in mind that I'm an Aussie girl and not used to mountainous terrain so it can't be anything too demanding physically. I'm capable of walking 20 miles but probably not capable of 20 miles up a mountain. :P

What are the best places to try chocolate, tlayuda and I guess Mezcal too? I don't drink alcohol but since I'm going to be there and it's an experience, I might as well give mezcal a try. Is there any cafes that I should visit? Where are the best tacos? You know I have to have a proper taco. The tacos we have in Australia are nothing like what real tasos are. It's funny but it's actually quite sad.

San Jose del Pacifico
I saw photos on the internet a few years ago and decided it was a place I just had to visit. It looks like such a beautiful, amazing place that I can't not go, at least for one night. I heard it's quite cold there but I really know nothing else about it. I found this website http://www.sanjosedelpacifico.com/ but they're renovating it and I can't see prices of the rooms so if you know how much a room there will cost me, please advise me. I'm thinking I'd like one night there, maybe two or three. I think it'd be a great place to work on my book (because it's just so beautiful) and I'd also like to go hiking in the area. If you know anything about hiking here, please tell me this too.

I'm open to suggestions about other places to visit in Oaxaca. Ivan suggested Atzompa but I know nothing about it and have no clue how to get there. Any help with that would be appreciated, as would any suggestions of where else to visit.

I'm actually really excited about going. It'll probably be a few months before I can book my flights or anything but I want to get it pretty much planned well in advance so I can make sure I have the money to go and do everything I want to do.

Ivan's Art Exhibition

I'm so excited for Ivan. He told me weeks ago that he would be having an art exhibition on April 3. Well, there's finally some details and a flyer to go with it.

So, I'm posting a link to my fave painting by Ivan. I absolutely love it, it left me speechless when I first saw it and I still don't know what to say.
Sepiente Isn't it amazing?

Ivan is the most amazing artist, in my opinion. Sometimes I don't know what to say when I look at Ivan's art because his mind is at a whole different level. It's like, WOW! How does he get whatever is in his head to come out with a paintbrush?

Anyway, the exhibition is at 9PM, in Oaxaca, on April 3.
Check out the flyer
Invitation or check out his blog Aguakemada to see more of his amazing art.

ARGH!!!

The damn dogs are driving me nuts. Wookie is chewing EVERYTHING!!!!! As soon as I take something off him he finds something else. GRRR!!!!

Anyway, here's my absolute fave song at the moment

The End Of Destruction - Arturo Meza

The End of Destruction

Love is freedom and the war governments falling down.
love is people and free is your earth
and your hand never more become alone
and your hand never more become alone
love, love ,love, love, love ,love
love is real and rich it is your earth
and your song is again my song.
and your song is again my song.
love, love ,love, love, love ,love
Peace is love and love is peace
Peace is love and love is peace
Love is freedom and the war governments falling down.
Love is people and free is your heart
and your hand never more become alone
and your hand never more become alone
love, love ,love, love, love ,love
love is will and rich it is your heart.
and Your son is again my son
and The future is a present now
love, love ,love, love, love ,love
Peace is love and love is peace.
love is peace and peace is love
Love is freedom and the war governments falling down.
love is people and free is your earth
and your hand never more become alone
and your song is again my song.
Love is freedom and the war governments falling down.
Love is people and free is your heart
and your hand never more become alone
and your hand never more become alone
Love is freedom and the war governments falling down.
love is will and rich it is your earth
and your song is again my song.
and your song is again my song.
love, love ,love, love, love ,love
Peace is love and love is peace.
love is peace and peace is love
Peace is love and love is peace.
love is peace and peace is love.

Yes, I love his accent. I love "rich is your heart".

My Journey to Oaxaca pt. 2

So, I've been cutting costs all over the place trying to save enough for my trip to Oaxaca and driving my family crazy in the process. But whatever. I'm determined to get there sometime this year.

However, I found that it would probably be cheaper to go on a Round the World trip instead of just visiting Mexico. There's a few countries I'd like to visit, so why not get as many in as I can in one go? I've been looking into it, anyway, because Scotland has really taken my fancy. My Mum's family (or, part) are from Scotland and Ireland and I've always wanted to go. Since Ireland isn't that far from Scotland I thought I might as well go to both. And then my friend who lives in Canada asked me to visit her in Alberta. It could be quite the trip. I also need to fit in Finland but I'm really not sure I can get all of these in but I'd like to try. We'll see, I guess.

It's just been really frustrating to make any plans with my cat being sick and having to go back to the vet hospital. There goes more money. Oh well. But the good news is my cat is actually doing very well, the insulin is working and the vets are happy. The problem is Blizzard doesn't appear to be happy. She doesn't want to eat her food, and without her food, she can't have her injection.

Help end hunger

This is a website I came across about a year ago. It allowed you to plat a game, and for every correct answer you earn 10 grains of rice to be donated to the UN World food program. It's really cool.

Check it out Free Rice

I've been having the most fun with the Spanish category. Since I'm learning Spanish I thought it would help me practice.

My Journey to Oaxaca

I've been intending to go to Oaxaca for 2 years now. Maybe I was afraid since I've never left Australia and I only made a half-hearted effort to get there - until last year when I decided to bite the bullet. In September I was on a boat, we were about to go whale watching and I was chatting on msn (via my mobile phone) with a friend in New Mexico and we agreed we would go to Mexico for the "Festival Mundial de la Digna Rabia". Well, Az is a huge fan of Subcomandante Marcos so we planned to go. It required me to save every cent I had from then until December - I even needed to get a passport (which, I did get one). Ivan said he would take me to Atzompa. However, I then hurt my back, my cat got diagnosed with diabetes (that cost me a fortune!) and I had a few family problems so I decided not to go to Mexico. Instead I would start saving again and maybe go for my birthday in June.

Now that all of those expenses are out the way I've started saving my pennies again, I've looked at prices for flights, accommodation in Oaxaca, food, buses etc. I'm on my way again and I'm very excited. it should be great and I can't wait. Today I opened a high interest savings account that I can't withdraw money from until I'm ready to go on my trip. I'll be able to deposit money but not withdraw and I'm so glad too, because I'm one of these people that tends to give money away if it's just sitting there. All I have to do now it let it build to a nice little sum, and decide when the best time to go to Oaxaca will be.

If you've got any advice about visiting Oaxaca, please let me hear it. I'm concerned about the weather because Perth is a hot city and I hear Oaxaca can be quite cold. Actually, I'm thinking Perth and Oaxaca aren't all that different temperature wise. Any ideas where the best places to stay are? Or what about food? Is there something I must try and see? Let me know.
